Can you think of good examples of child participation from your own work? Share with other participants positive experiences and examples of meaningful engagement of children in your work, your community, or your family surroundings:

I have mostly worked with youth (13-18), so my examples of child participation are pretty narrowed down to that specific age range. One initiative that we employ is youth-led committees, with resolutions on various topics for youth, by youth. The research, the teambuilding exercises, and the discussions are all youth-led. The young people involved have 100% ownership of their resolution, from its formulation, and its solutions to its publishing.

From the discussions I have personally facilitated, it is heartwarming to see motivated young people being inspired, connected to the world around them and most importantly, feeling empowered.

For several years we carried out volunteer activities that involved collaboration between students in mainstream schools and students with special educational needs. Thus, the project highlighted people with different needs and made us understand that we must respect each other, to understand the needs of others. The activities were successful, giving students the opportunity to become aware of their strengths and weaknesses and to want to become better.

During one of our engagements with children that we work with, we were supposed to come up with solutions to help the girls with menstrual health hygiene. looking at the basic challenges that most girls face, we already had our solutions to helping these girls. when we got there, we asked them how they would love to be assisted. Their challenges and solutions to those challenges on menstrual health management were completely different with what we had in mind and their ideas were even more brilliant. This helped us understand that children sometimes what they need and should be allowed to participate in programs that involve them. If we had just gone with our solution, they would have accepted it but it would not really solve the challenges they had.

Wonderful, I have been working with children for more than 10 years but it seems to me by listening these stories that I have never known how to deal with young people.This is of a great help for me.

I’ve always worked with children and for children when developing cultural projects in endangered communities. Nowadays I’m working with the “World Religions Education 4 Kids” in a literacy project. But I truly feel a lack of children participation in the international interfaith organizations.

I have now worked for children with disabilities for two years now, and what I have experience by engaging them actively is overwhelming, these children are brilliant and it as actually enables them to unleashed their other potentials by coming up with ideas that enables them solve the challenges they were going through
